Christmas is the season of music! Orfeus Treasure Chamber is visited by the Italian baroque specialist, organist, and harpsichordist Luca Guglielmi in a program centered around Christmas with music by the great baroque masters Johann Sebastian Bach and Arcangelo Corelli.
Since its founding in 2015, Orpheo Baroque has become an indispensable part of the capital's music scene and a meeting place for both the musicians of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and some of Sweden's leading freelance baroque musicians. The ensemble's more chamber music-oriented approach, as we encounter here, emerges under the banner of Orpheus' Treasure Trove.
Each concert with Orpheus Baroque is led by guest top musicians in early music, and here we once again encounter the Italian organist and harpsichordist Luca Guglielmi, one of the world's foremost experts in early music.

Music by Giovanni Battista Bononcini, Alessandro Scarlatti, Nicola Porpora and Antonio Caldara
In the early decades of the 18th century, a new trend emerged where beautiful arias were accompanied by a violin or a cello. Here, we get to enjoy exquisite singing and captivating instrumental music with the great Swedish soprano Maria Keohane.
Some of the composers who embraced the new style were Alessandro Scarlatti, Antonio Caldara, Giovanni Bononcini, and Nicola Porpora – the latter, in addition to writing over 50 operas and numerous other compositions, also taught several renowned singers, including the castrato Farinelli.
Since its establishment in 2015, Orpheus Baroque Stockholm has become an indispensable part of the capital's music scene and a meeting place for both philharmonic musicians and some of Sweden's leading freelance baroque musicians.
The artistic directors are the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's solo cellist Johannes Rostamo and the concertmaster and baroque violinist Elin Gabrielsson. The ensemble's more chamber music-oriented approach, as we encounter here, is presented under the banner of Orpheus’ Treasure Trove.

Orpheus Baroque follows in her footsteps with music by Gustav Düben the elder, who was the court kapellmeister in Stockholm and a significant figure in the city's musical life, as well as French and Italian greats such as Lully, Carissimi, Stradella, and Corelli.
This concert is led by the French-Italian baroque violinist Emmanuel Resche-Caserta.

The music
Music and texts by John Dowland, Matthew Locke, William Shakespeare, Tobias Hume, Marin Marais, Molière, François Couperin, Samuel Scheidt, Johann Sebastian Bach, Jon Fosse, Giovanni Legrenzi, Spurrier and Antonio Valente
Orfeus Baroque, since its formation in 2015, has evolved into an indispensable part of the capital's music scene and a meeting place for both musicians of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and some of Sweden's leading freelance baroque musicians. This time, we hear the ensemble in its more chamber music-oriented setting under the banner of Orpheus’s Treasure Trove.
The focus is on music for the viola da gamba, a string instrument that was common during the 15th to 17th centuries and comes in several sizes. The sound of the viola da gamba is soft yet intense, and with the movie Tous les matins du monde (1991), both the instrument and the gamba composer Marin Marais gained great attention. Other Renaissance and Baroque masters who composed for the viola da gamba, such as John Dowland, François Couperin, and Johann Sebastian Bach, are also featured.
Here, the music is interspersed with readings of contemporary texts by celebrities such as John Locke, Shakespeare, David Hume, and Molière. The reader is the actor Stina Ekblad, who has participated in countless theater productions, films, and TV productions. Since 1988, she has been a member of the permanent ensemble at the Royal Dramatic Theatre and in recent years has appeared in productions such as The Tempest, The Ghost Sonata, Peer Gynt, The City of Women, and Electra.

Johan Agrell Sinfonia D major SheA D:151515
Alessandro Rolla Symphony in B flat major BI 540
Welcome to the 18th-century music scene in Milan. The city was a creative hub for the development of symphonies and witnessed significant moments in music history. Among those who visited the city and found inspiration was the young Mozart. We also encounter a number of relatively unknown masters today, such as Brioschi, Rolla – and the Swedish composer Per Brant, who found a new style in Milan.
More well-known names perhaps include Niccolò Zingarelli, who was the kapellmeister in Milan and composed 35 operas, and also taught both Bellini and Donizetti. One of the great names in Italian Baroque was the Milanese Sammartini. He hardly ever left his hometown of Milan but had contact with celebrities such as Johann Christian Bach, Boccherini, Mozart, and Gluck.
Orfeus Barock's highly popular concerts feature thematic programs and collaborations with invited top musicians from the international baroque music scene. This concert is led by the music researcher, double bassist, and conductor Vanni Moretto, who himself studied at the Milan Conservatory.

Robert de Visée 1655 – 1732/1733 – Pièces de Théorb from Suite in a minor
Michel de la Barre c. 1675 – 1745 – Suite IX in G major Sonate L’inconnue
Jacques Duphly 1715 – 1789 – from Pièces de Clavecin
Louis-Gabriel Guillemain 1705 – 1770 – Trio sonata V in F major opus 12
Orfeus Baroque presents a program featuring chamber music selections from the Baroque era in France. The French style is characterized by richly ornamented and heartfelt musical language, although many composers were also inspired by other styles. François Couperin's collection of chamber music suites, "Les Goûts réunis" (The United Tastes), composed between 1714 and 1724, is an example of how the French and the more lively and outgoing Italian styles could be merged.
In our program, Clérambault's trio sonata is perhaps the most Italian piece and could almost have been written by Corelli. Like the aforementioned composers, Muffat was a binding link between the French and Italian styles through his studies with both Corelli and Lully. In France, the courts of Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King, and Louis XV were central to musical life. Among many others, the lutenist Robert de Visée and the flutist Michel de la Barre were active there. Duphly represents the distinctly French Baroque's "last breath" - in his later pieces, he attempts techniques of classicism, symbolizing how French Baroque dances dissolve into the affected elegance of the Rococo era. Guillemain's quartets are written for the exact same instrumentation as Telemann's famous so-called Paris quartets, which were performed during his visit to the city. However, Guillemain's pieces are written a few years later and perhaps have a slightly more French coloration.

In a journey between northern music cities around the Baltic Sea, a selection of the finest seventeenth-century music is presented. Music and collections that we find here – for instance the Düben Collection in Uppsala, Sweden, and similar traces in Turku, Finland, and Tallinn, Estonia – testify about a rich and great musical exchance between cities around the Baltic Sea, already at this time in history.
Orpheus Baroque welcomes Finnish Baroque soprano Kajsa Dahlbäck, an internationally renowned soloist specialised in older and modern music. She studied under Emma Kirkby, a legendary name of the early vocal music movement, and she is a founder of the Vasa Baroque festival in Ostrobothnia, Finland.

Hinrich Philip Johnsen Concerto in F major for two bassoons, strings and basso continuo
Antonio Vivaldi Konsert Concerto in e minor for cello, bassoon, strings and basso continuo RV 409
The bassoon gained ground in the seventeenth century and replaced its predecessors, such as the dulcian. Orpheus Baroque welcomes the versatile, award-winning Italian bassoonist Sergio Azzolini. He is represented on numerous albums, including four volumes of bassoon concertos by Vivaldi – who wrote no less than 39 pieces, thus contributing to elevating an instrument that had previously been kept in the background.
We hear two works by Vivaldi as well as a piece by his contemporary fellow countryman, Benedetto Marcello – both of whom were from Venice, the centre of music of that time. The title of this concert, La discussione, is not derived from any of the pieces, but is rather an expression of Sergio Azzolini’s understanding of how the instruments are “in discussion” in Vivaldi’s Concerto in E-minor.
We also hear German Baroque in so-called galant style by Johann Friedrich Fasch, and a piece by German-born Hinrich Philip Johnsen – who was active in Sweden and one of the founders of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 1771.

Joseph Haydn Missa in Angustii (”Nelsonmässan”)
Judith Bingham A Golden Legend – Concerto for Organ and Orchestra (Premiere)
As a year of challenges and uncertainties comes to an end, we gather in the name of music to draw strength together for what lies ahead. Turmoil also characterized Vienna in the summer of 1798 when Joseph Haydn composed the Missa in Angustiis in just over a month. The previous year, Napoleon had defeated the Austrian armies and was now on his way to conquer Egypt. The anxiety is channeled by Haydn in the dramatic D minor opening of the mass, but just a few weeks before the premiere, Vienna received the news that Admiral Nelson had defeated Napoleon, and the work was given the triumphant nickname, the Nelson Mass.
In the magnificent sculpture of Saint George and the Dragon in our Cathedral, the battle between good and evil is vividly depicted, with George’s sword raised to strike against the mighty dragon. The sculpture is the starting point for Judith Bingham’s newly written organ concerto, composed especially for the Cathedral’s organ. Bingham, who has previously written organ music for the cathedrals in Kalmar and Västerås, enjoys composing programmatic music, and we are eagerly looking forward to hearing Mattias Wager perform her new piece.
Our New Year’s speaker, Lars Strannegård, Dean of the Stockholm School of Economics, will remind us of the necessity of culture and art in a world otherwise dominated by commercial forces (speech to be held in Swedish).

It is a musical description of creativity, beginning with a sense of chaos that is immediately reminiscent of the avantgarde style of the twentieth century!

Georg Philipp Telemann Quartet No 6 in e minor – Paris Ouartet No 12 TWV 43:e4
Georg Philipp Telemann, a central figure of the Baroque era, was active in Germany throughout his life. We associate him with cities such as Leipzig, Frankfurt and Hamburg. But there was also a brief, yet important Paris period.
For eight months around 1737–38, Telemann was in the French capital. He absorbed impressions from the music of Rameau, among others, resulting in the French style leaving an impression on his own music. We have two examples from the so-called Paris quartets (there are a total of twelve), which frame three French Baroque masters: Leclair, Couperin and Hotteterre – nicknamed “Le Romain” after studying in Rome.
Hotteterre was also a masterful flute player and came from a family of wind instrument makers and virtuosos. Orpheus Baroque welcomes Finnish flute player Pauliina Fred, a specialist in early flute-playing. Here, she plays a predecessor to the transverse flute that is made out of wood and has fewer keys.

Georg Friedrich Handel from Coronation Anthems
Finally! In recent years we have seen her income from scaffolding and tarpaulins. Now the last works are being done and the tower is starting to become visible bit by bit again in Stockholm's city skyline. At the beginning of June, we celebrate both the exterior rebirth of the Great Church, the nation state of Sweden's 500 years and our HM the King's 40 years on the throne. It all coincides with National Day on June 6, but the celebration expands over the neighboring days. To have a real celebration, of course, musical elements are required, and what could be better than performing music that sounded for the first time in Stockholm almost at the same time as the Storkyrkan was completed in its baroque costume, namely Johan Helmich Romans - Then Swedish Mass.
With this work, Roman completed his quest to show the "flexibility of the Swedish language to church music". In his music, Roman - "the father of Swedish music" - was highly international with views not least of Italy and England, where Georg Friedrich Händel became a great source of inspiration for the young Swedish composer. A few years after Roman left England, in 1727, it was again time for the coronation of a new English monarch, and from this occasion we take some of Handel's most beloved works Coronation anthems, of which Zadok the priest has been performed at all coronations since then. So also at Queen Elizabeth II's coronation which took place, almost to the day, 70 years ago. We can probably guess that this work will also be played at the coronation of Charles III at the beginning of May.

Georg Friedrich Handel Ode for St Cecilia's Day
Saint Cecilia is the patron saint of church music (and the blind). In the late 17th century, she was celebrated every 22nd of December by London’s musicians with banquets and a newly composed ode. Handel revived this tradition in 1739 with his cantata Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day. The cantata is characterised by its exuberant choral and orchestral movements, interspersed with arias where the soloists are invited to excel in improvised embellishments and coloraturas.

George Frideric Handel Messiah
Orpheus Baroque Stockholm takes on a masterpiece with German violinist and conductor Gottfried von der Goltz, leader of Freiburger Barockorchester. In a collaboration with St. Jacob’s Chamber Choir and Scandinavian star soloists, they perform Handel’s monumental masterpiece.
Messiah was originally intended to be performed at Easter and premiered at a charity concert in Dublin on 13 April 1742. It was immediately a huge success and Handel presented it to much acclaim at London’s Foundling Hospital each year until his death in 1759. Numerous stories from the Old and New Testaments are compiled in Messiah, each presented with Baroque means of musical expression spanning from spiritual elevation to temperamental volition. The Hallelujah Chorus is one of the most famous sections.

XXI Stockholm Early Music Festival 2022
BIRGER JARL AND MECHTILD (UTTINI/JOHNSEN)
A milestone in Swedish music history is re-emerging. Singing soloists, dancers, choir and orchestra perform one of history's first operas in Swedish. "Birger Jarl and Mechtild" is a "medieval baroque opera", a play written for libretto in 1774 by Gustav III with music by Francesco Uttini and Philip Johnsen. The fascinating story of the Danish princess Mechtild's marriage to Birger Jarl, according to the founder of Erikskrönikan Stockholm, is in focus.
In this abbreviated staging, the divertissement Æglé, an "opera within an opera" constitutes the main part. Here, Birger Jarl and Mechtild change their characters into mythological creatures, as in a role-playing game.
A unique opportunity to discover Swedish baroque opera and a sneak peek onto a new National stage for early music!
NOTE: for SEMFestival pass holders, only Monday's 6/6 3.30 pm performance of "Birger Jarl and Mechtild" applies.
In cooperation with the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and Drottningholms Slottsteater.

George Frideric Handel Messiah
Handel’s oratorio Messiah was not a great success at its world premiere in Dublin in 1742, but since then it has grown and become one of the most performed and beloved pieces of music in the world. As here, it is traditional to perform this music around Christmas time. Messiah includes several stories from the Old and New Testaments, each one presented through expressive Baroque musical forms, ranging from spiritual elevation to temperamental determination. The Hallelujah Chorus is one of the most famous sections. For the first time since 1978, Handel’s Messiah will now be performed in its entirety at Konserthuset Stockholm.

Kreeta-Maria Kentala leader & violin soloist
Orpheus Baroque welcomes Kreeta-Maria Kentala – a leading performer of early music in Finland.
Orpheus Baroque aims to continuously broaden its repertoire and knowledge of the vast scope of Baroque music – which spans over 300 years. This time, we will explore Italian Baroque, with Arcangelo Corelli (1653–1713) as the musical hub in order to explore pieces by students and contemporary composers. Corelli, whom Queen Christina of Sweden hired as a musician in Rome, hardly wrote utility music: her rather brief oeuvre is characterised by the connoisseur’s demand for quality and originality.

Johann Sebastian Bach Musikalisches Opfer
Here, the ensemble takes on one of the great Baroque masterpieces: Johann Sebastian Bach’s The Musical Offering, which was the result of a meeting between Bach and Frederick II of Prussia, also known as Frederick the Great. He was not only king and elector of Brandenburg; he was also a keen amateur musician and composer. When they met at the royal residence in Potsdam, Frederick the Great gave Bach a clever and original theme as the basis for improvising a three-part fugue. Bach did just that, but declined the challenge to also improvise a six-part fugue. Instead, a few months later he published a collection of pieces based on the theme, which he dedicated to Frederick II of Prussia. This contrapuntal masterpiece would come to be called Musikalisches Opfer – the Musical Offering.

Music by by Maria Margherita Grimani, Johann Joseph Fux, Antonio Caldara and Antonio Vivaldi.
Not much is known about the life and work of Maria Margherita Grimani, except for one thing, which is known without hesitation: she was the first female composer to have an opera performed at the Royal Opera in Vienna. She also composed other music for voice, including two oratorios. As we will hear at this concert, her music is filled with powerful emotion.
Much more is known about Johann Joseph Fux, Austria’s most prominent Baroque composer. He travelled frequently to Italy and Venice, where music made a powerful impression on him. One of the best known composers from Venice is Vivaldi, who was also active at the time. Another Venetian-born composer was Antonio Caldara, who travelled in the other direction instead: to Vienna, where he was court conductor from 1716, which coincides with the period during which Maria Margherita Grimani was active in the Viennese court. These musical lives cross paths at this concert.

The chalumeau is the predecessor to today’s clarinet and was common in the Baroque era. Pieces composed for the instrument are often performed on modern clarinets, but here, we will hear the music as it was intended to sound. The soloists in Telemann’s Concerto for Two Chalumeaux are the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s clarinettist Alf Hörberg and Lorenzo Coppola, who will also lead Orpheus Baroque at this concert. Alf Hörberg is fascinated with period music and was a member for many years of the world-renowned Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century in Amsterdam, led by Frans Brüggen. Lorenzo Coppola is a European authority on Baroque music and has performed with the most prominent ensembles with a focus on older repertoires, including Les Arts Florissants, Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra.

They met at the King’s Theatre in London, where Roman was a violinist while Handel was an in-house composer. In London, Roman also heard Italian Francesco (?) Geminiani, a violinist to the English court. Back in Sweden, Roman was appointed vice conductor to the court and became acquainted with the composer and violin and piano virtuoso Johan Agrell, before Agrell moved to Germany.
